3-D Broadcasting to Start During World Cup
The Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) said yesterday it would launch the three-dimensional (3-D) broadcasting that offers most accurate information on South Korea as well as soccer games.

The 3-D broadcasting has been designed ahead of the World Cup finals, which will be jointly hosted by South Korea and Japan, from May 31 through June.

The government said it is now working in cooperation with the state research group Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and several businesses for the project.

Together with terrestrial broadcasters and independent television program publishers, the government will make a nationwide map using the 3-D technology in its first stage.

In addition, the government said it would negotiate with the World Cup organizer FIFA about airing soccer games with 3-D pictures. The government will build special televisions that will be 6.6 meters wide and 3.6 meters long near the World Cup stadiums in 10 cities.

``To watch 3-D images, viewers must wear special glasses,'' said Cha Yang- shin of the ministry.
